I have the 100 L macro lens. It has a noisy IS system in it. So it makes it easy to know if IS on running or not. With playback and menu on IS stops. This makes sense. Whenever you are looking through the lens it is nicer to have the image stabilized. There is no purpose to running IS when in the menus or in play back.
